The Campeonato Aberto de Xadrez de Moçambique Open Section 2026 (Mozambique Open Chess Championship) concluded as a tightly contested seven-round Swiss event. Key Matches and Tournament Narrative

The race at the top remained open until the final rounds.

IM Banele Mhango produced a solid and consistent performance. He began with three consecutive wins (including victories over Raymond Magagula and Mateus Vasco). In Round 4 he shared the point with CM Lebajoa Tsephe of Lesotho.

Mhango then produced two important wins with the white pieces: first against FM Ivan Andrade in Round 5, and then a key victory over FM Donaldo Paiva in Round 6. That win moved him into a share of the lead. In the final round he was paired against eventual winner Keith Khumalo and the game ended in a draw, leaving both players on 6 points.

CM Keith Khumalo navigated the field with impressive efficiency. After an early bye/win he scored a series of victories, including a Round 4 win over CM Farisse Joao. In Round 5 he drew with FM Donaldo Paiva. The decisive moment came in Round 6, when Khumalo defeated top seed IM Gillan Bwalya with the white pieces. That result gave him a clear path to the top. His final-round draw with Mhango was enough to secure first place on the better tie-break.

CM Lourenco Napoleao was the surprise package of the event. The Mozambican Candidate Master scored steadily, including a final-round win over CM Farisse Joao, to finish on 6 points and claim third place on home soil, an excellent result against a field containing several higher-rated titled players.

Other notable results included:

• IM Gillan Bwalya recovered from his loss to Khumalo to finish on 5½ points after a final-round win.
• FM Donaldo Paiva and FM Ivan Andrade both scored 5½ and showed the strength of the Mozambican contingent.
• Several lower-rated players, including Dumisa Nkosi and Tshediso Mpya from South Africa, posted strong 5-point scores.

A number of higher-rated players, including FM Joseph Mwale (Malawi) and Johannes Mabusela (South Africa), withdrew or scored zero after early losses and did not complete the tournament.
