International Master Oatlhotse Providence successfully defended his National Chess Championship crown, retaining Botswana’s most prestigious chess title after another outstanding performance at the 2026 BetXplosion National Chess Championship – Open Section.
Having entered the tournament as the defending national champion, Oatlhotse once again demonstrated why he is regarded as Botswana’s strongest chess player. Over nine demanding rounds, he combined consistency, resilience, and precise play to finish clear first with 8 points out of a possible 9, becoming back-to-back National Champion.
His successful title defence is a remarkable accomplishment, as retaining a national championship requires not only exceptional chess ability but also the composure to withstand the pressure that comes with being the player everyone is aiming to beat.
Champion’s Performance
Oatlhotse remained among the tournament leaders throughout the championship, producing a series of impressive victories while minimizing mistakes against a field that included titled players as well as many of Botswana’s strongest competitors.
His final score of 8/9 secured the championship outright, finishing half a point ahead of his nearest challengers and successfully defending the title he captured in the previous edition of the championship.

CM Mosenya Ndawana, Moagaesi Tshepo, CM Kokome Oaitse, CM Mosutha Thuso, and Sebetlela Gaasite all finished on 7 points, illustrating how closely contested the event remained until the final round.
Further down the top ten, FM Njobvu Ignatius and Kitso Innocent Kgosietsile both recorded 6½ points, completing an exceptionally competitive leaderboard.
